The current spike is so severe that state legislators are in talks in the Senate regarding a proposed bill that will increase criminal penalties for individuals caught stealing catalytic converters.

If Senate Bill 432 is passed, the possession of a stolen catalytic converter  would become a state jail felony,

But that doesn’t mean you have to wait to prosecute and be a victim.

Is Legislation Enough to Prevent Theft at Your Business?

Although legislation is a promising start and may deter some criminals, Thieves will inevitably attempt to cheat the system.

The ease with which a catalytic converter can be accessed and removed, alongside their high resale value, means thieves are willing to go to any length to retrieve the precious metals inside.

With an estimated $50-250 return for each converter, some of these thieves are even willing to risk their lives, so it is unlikely they will be deterred solely by legislation.

It is also important to consider the cost of replacing a stolen catalytic converter, which now runs upwards of $2000, so not having a security solution can be an expensive mistake.

How To Avoid Becoming a Victim of Catalytic Converter Theft

There are several measures you can take to help lower the risk of theft such as:

  • Installing lights to ensure sites are sufficiently lit

  • Installing secure perimeter fencing

  • Ensuring gates are locked

But the only way to truly protect sites is by deploying a preventive, proactive surveillance solution.
